Asbestos found at Pearson School in Winchester Connecticut

A minor flood last week exposed asbestos in a Pearson Middle School classroom that the district is taking steps to remove before students and teacher return in late August.

WINSTED - A minor flood last week exposed asbestos in a Pearson Middle School classroom that the district is taking steps to remove before students and teacher return in late August.
The flood, which occurred July 31, was caused by a malfunctioning air conditioner.
"The condensation pipe from the air-conditioning unit backed up and what it did in room 207 was, the air conditioning units in the vents are right in the middle of the room, the water came right out of the unit and was collecting on the floor," Pearson Principal Clay Krevolin said.
Water that settled on the floor of the classroom caused tiles to expand, become loose and dislodge, Krevolin said.
The glue that adheres the tiles to the floorboards, called mastic, can, in the case of older buildings, contain asbestos, he said. Tests were conducted last week by Groton-based Mystic Air Quality, and it was confirmed that the glue in Pearson did contain asbestos, Krevolin said...(read more)
