Danny Cavett has dedicated his life to helping others.
As director of the Pastoral Care Department at the OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City, Cavett has spent much of his 29-year career tending to the needs of chronically ill children and their familes, including young cancer patients at The Jimmy Everest Center for Cancer & Blood Disorders in Children.
In an ironic twist, Cavett is also a cancer survivor, having endured chemotherapy, radiation treatment and a bone marrow transplant. He and his family also lost everything to a devastating tornado in 1999 in which more than 30 people were killed.
"You never heard one word of complaint from Danny throughout it all," said one friend. "Not once did he say 'Why me?' His only thoughts were for others. That's what this wonderful man is all about, helping others."
Besides playing a pivotal role following the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing and serving as a grief counselor in New York City after September 11, Cavett has been instumental in establishing four camps for terminally or chronically ill children. One even bears his name, Camp Cavett, which began in 1997 with through gifts from the Oklahoma City University Nursing School, Oklahoma City University, Methodist Camp Division, and Children's Hospital of Oklahoma.
Cavett is a member of the boards of directors of many organizations including: the Leukemia Lymphoma Society, LifeShare Transplant Donor Services of Oklahoma, Oklahoma Blood Institute and Oklahoma Children's Cancer Association.
On a side note, sources say he is also one fine golfer and
a pretty good Elvis impersonator.
