Pulmonary Asbestosis Asbestosis, the
inhalation of asbestos fibers, is not a cancerous lung disease. The asbestos fibers
once in the lung cause inflammation and irritation. When the body reacts and fights
this foreign particle, it leads to further inflammation. The typical symptoms
of asbestosis include shortness of breath and coughing. Serious asbestosis is
caused by heavy exposure to asbestos over a period of time. People who have asbestosis
are at high risk of developing lung cancer or mesothelioma.
