Squamous Cell Carcinoma X-Ray
Squamous cell carcinoma is a common form of lung cancer, accounting for approximately
one-third of all cases of bronchogenic carcinomas.Unlike adenocarcinoma, it is
strongly linked with a history of cigarette smoking. Its histogenesis may be related
tochronic inflammation and injury of the bronchial epithelium, which leads to
replacement of the normal ciliated columnar epithelium by a squamous epithelium. This
transformation from a glandular epithelium to squamous epithelium is known as
squamous metaplasia.
The mass seen here is a squamous cell carcinoma of the left
upper lobe of lung. Squamous cell carcinomas and small cell anaplastic carcinomas
have the greatest association with smoking as a risk. Squamous cell carcinomas
tend to form large, central masses because they often arise in larger airways.
